Gammanpila poised to answer SLPP’s call for resignation

Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila stated that a press conference will be held today (13) in response to the statement released by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) calling for the resignation of the subject minister over the recent fuel price hike.

The SLPP released a statement that the Minister in charge of the subject should take the responsibility of increasing fuel prices at a time when the people are under severe pressure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A statement issued by the General Secretary of the party, Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam states that the Minister in charge of the subject should take full responsibility and resign.

The statement stated the party was “deeply concerned” about the government’s decision to increase fuel prices and make it more difficult for the public affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hiru News also reported yesterday (12) that an internal discussion is set to be held regarding the recent fuel price hike. Reportedly, lengthy discussions are being held to understand whether a concession could be given to revise fuel prices, however, a final decision is yet to be taken.

Opposition Sajith Premadasa also issued a statement in this regard, noting that the Government has no option but to reverse the arbitrary decision taken to increase fuel prices.

He also raised several questions from the Government and the SLPP, including if the price hike was a decision taken at the whim of one minister.

He questioned as to how one minister could be blamed for such a decision that are usually granted approval by the Cabinet of Ministers.
