SL’s cardboard coffins attract Vietnam buyers; place first order

The first order for the first ever project to produce coffins made out of cardboard by Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council, member Priyantha Sahabandu said.

He told the Daily Mirror that the Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia MV has initiated a project to produce coffins made out of cardboard for COVID-19 victims.

However, the first order has been placed by Vietnam for 1,000 cardboard coffins and the shipment need to be freighted by next Monday.

“This project was aimed at providing relief to people who are unable afford for regular wooden coffins that cost in the range of Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 40,000 to bury or cremate their near and dear who died of COVID-19,” he said.

Therefore, he decided to manufacture cardboard coffins at a cost of Rs. 5,000 as a relief to COVID-19 vicims and their families. Also, he requested people to contact him (0777315605) for easy delivery.

He asked people to use this product since this is an environmental-friendly product and more importantly will minimise felling trees. Mr. Sahabandu said that a full service package is available at a cost of Rs.10,000, including the transportation and the cost of the hearse.

He said about 400 wooden coffins are needed in the country for burials and cremations. To make one wooden coffin, two trees need to be cut down. However, with this new concept we can save trees and Environment.
