Weather Alert : Advisory issued for heavy rains & rough seas

The Department of Meteorology says the showery condition is expected to enhance some extent in the southwestern part of the Island in the next few days.

Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.

Fairly heavy rainfalls about 75 mm may occur in some places. Several spells of showers will occur in the North-Western province.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara district during the evening or night.

Strong winds of about 50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central hills, Northern, North-Central, and Southern provinces and in the Trincomalee district.

The public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has also issued a severe weather advisory for strong winds and rough seas.

The department said there is a possibility of strong winds gusting up to (60-70) kmph and swell waves of about 2.0 – 2.5 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Therefore, the above sea areas will be very rough. The naval and fishing communities who are engaged in fishing and naval activities in the above sea areas are requested to be vigilant in this regard.
