Woman arrested over murder of 12 yr old granddaughter

A 63-year-old woman has been arrested over the murder of a 12-year-old girl in the Thiranaveli area in Kopay, Jaffna.

The Police stated that the body of the child was found inside a room of a lodge in the area after being informed of a foul smell being emitted from the closed room.

On Tuesday (Sep 12), the Kapay Police found the body of a child who had died several days before on one bed, and an unconscious woman on another bed in the same room.

The deceased has been identified as a 12-year-old resident of Palliya Road, Trincomalee.

The woman had been rushed to hospital and is currently receiving treatment at the Jaffna Hospital under Police protection.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the child is her granddaughter from her daughter’s first marriage.

The Police said the woman and child had arrived at the lodge on Saturday (Sep 09). The woman had, thereafter, administered insulin and also made the child consume 10 sleeping tablets and had murdered her.

The Kopay Police are conducting an investigation into the murder.
